Fundamental values
It’s another busy back-to-work season for building professionals, along with its share of doubts to absorb. The real-estate crisis didn’t take a vacation, and conditions remain just as strained for new builds, while renovation is, for now, only barely limiting the damage. And as if the economic climate weren’t enough, the political upheavals of recent months have added yet another dose of uncertainty.
This worrying—if not anxiety-inducing—context has direct repercussions on business activity, when a measure of stability would be more than welcome to help keep a steady course through the storm. Crises are multiplying, public discontent is growing, and the bright spell of the Olympic Games has not dispelled the many fears hanging over our society.
In these troubled times on many fronts, the Confederation of Building Crafts and Small Businesses (Capeb) deemed it appropriate, at the start of the summer, to reiterate a few fundamental values for the organizations it represents. As an apolitical body, it issued a well-judged statement: « Since its creation in 1946, Capeb has weathered the country’s political and social upheavals, always demonstrating a strong sense of duty and remaining a pillar of stability for building professionals, proud of their values, » emphasized president Jean-Christophe Réponse […] « Capeb’s role, acting responsibly, is to ensure that the new political landscape gives craft construction companies the ability to realize their potential in the interest of the collective. »
Among the major priorities it intends to uphold and defend: fellowship among professionals as a cardinal value; equality of individuals and their inclusion through work without discrimination; respect for democratic principles; progress through social advancement; freedom to undertake without hindrance; and business independence. These are core values that should go without saying—but are always stronger when restated.
